The Rega Planar 3 RS Edition (Rega Special) is built upon a brand-new aluminium metallic HPL plinth, creating the stiffest plinth we have ever manufactured at the Planar 3 level. This stunning dark brushed metallic plinth with high gloss black edges provides a striking foundation for the iconic Planar 3. The RS Edition includes a custom-tuned Neo MK2 PSU, with each motor vibration circuit fine-tuned to its specific motor. The low-noise 24 V motor drives the sub-platter via our Reference EBLT drive belt, ensuring ultimate speed accuracy. To complete the package, the legendary, hand-built RB330 tonearm is fitted and loaded with our brand new multi-award-winning Nd5 moving magnet cartridge.

Rega has pioneered the use of lightweight rigid plinths for many years. The clever use of a lightweight particulate core with a highly rigid phenolic resin skin became the foundations of the performance achieved by the iconic original Planar range.

The new Planar 3 RS Edition takes this design philosophy to the next level by utilising High Pressure Laminate (HPL) previously only used on Planar 6, Planar 8, and Planar 10 for additional rigidity. This premium HPL is finished with a stunning brushed dark aluminium tone metallic surface with a beautiful satin finish. Furthermore, a double brace system is mounted where increased rigidity is required (between the tonearm mounting and the main hub bearing) which forms a structurally sound “stressed beam.”

This intricate plinth design prevents energy absorption and unwanted resonances, which would add unnatural distortions to the music. Equally, a heavier mass can transfer more unwanted energy, such as motor or bearing noise directly into the rotating platter. The use of braces allows for a double-thickness phenolic resin in these key areas, which directly counters the energy absorption caused by mass and unwanted energy transference.
