The connectivity of the new models has been improved with coaxial and optical digital audio connections, the maximum sound pressure level is higher, and the remote control functionality is more extensive. The new electronics of the subwoofers also include new power supplies and additional features controlled by DIP switches.
The F-series subwoofers, designed in collaboration with designer Harri Koskinen, were launched in 2012. Custom-designed to support and extend the bass response of the G-series two-way active speakers, these subwoofers have always offered excellent sound quality, high sound pressure, and the same quality and reliability as Genelec's professional models, in addition to their stylish appearance.
The addition of digital input connectors alongside analog connectors responds to the development of modern streamers, televisions, and sound cards, where the proportion of digital audio connections has increased.
In addition to digital input connectors, both models feature analog RCA (2 pcs) and 3.5 mm stereo jack connectors for two main channels and an RCA connector for the LFE channel. Output connectors for the main speakers are two RCAs in both models, and the F Two also has two balanced XLR connectors. The F Two also has a Link output connector (RCA), which allows multiple subwoofers to be daisy-chained. The subwoofers' bass management divides the main channel signal at 85 Hz; frequencies below this are reproduced by the subwoofer, and higher frequencies are sent to the main speakers via the output connectors.
Two digital audio sources and one analog source can be simultaneously connected to the subwoofer's input connectors. The selection between these audio sources works automatically or by using the remote control buttons. The analog RCA and 3.5 mm input connectors are wired in parallel, so selection between them is not possible. Of course, different audio sources can be connected to both, and only one used at a time.
The new F-series subwoofers come with an RF remote control that can be used to adjust the volume of the entire system, select between audio sources connected to the subwoofer, and switch the subwoofer on, off, and mute it. The subwoofer's control can also be taught to the IR remote controls of most televisions and other devices. A third way to control the system volume is via Genelec's optional wired remote control.
The electronics of the F-series subwoofers have been completely redesigned: instead of a traditional transformer, there is a power supply suitable for different voltages and AC frequencies, and the new Class D amplifiers are Genelec's own design. New features that improve the usability of the subwoofers include automatic power-on (ISS) selection and sensitivity adjustment, and a new HT (Home Theater) setting, which maximizes the subwoofer's sensitivity and prevents volume control via the subwoofer's own remote control. This setting is intended for situations where an audio source with its own volume control, such as a home theater receiver, is connected to the analog input connectors, and that device is desired for volume control.
